FAQ + Care

HOW DOES SUGARING WORK?

The warmed sugar paste which is made of sugar, lemon, and water is molded onto the body area several times using a gloved hand. As this is being molded, the sugar paste is able to melt into the hair follicle allowing an easier, gentle extraction from the root. With a flicking motion the hair is gently lifted out of the follicle by the root.

IS IT GOING TO HURT?

Sugaring is removing the hair by the root, so you will feel the extractions. Some people feel a tingling sensation. With repeated treatments, this sensation is minimized as the hair becomes more refined and hair bulb becomes smaller. Many clients think it feels like a mini massage as the sugar paste is being molded onto the skin and much gentler than waxing. Some clients feel that taking a pain reliever 30 minutes prior to service helps diminish the sensation.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Rate of hair growth depends on the individual person. Expect to be ready for another sugaring within three to six weeks. Hair can be extracted as short as 1/4” or the length of a grain of rice. No need to help trim before your service, we can trim for you and prefer to do so then have the hair be too short for extraction.

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT?

Exfoliate no sooner than 24 hours before service. Removing the surface level of dead skin and pushing the hair out and up is very important and allows the extraction of hair to be successful! No sun tanning prior to service. No need to apply lotions or deodorants to skin before your service. The skin needs to stay dry for the sugar to adhere to the skin and hair, any extra moisture makes the process much harder to accomplish.

ARE THERE CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR SUGARING?

Yes, here are a few physical contraindications or things you should advice your sugarista before any services. Bruising, swelling, skin rashes, open wounds, skin tags, HIV positive, sunburns, psoriasis, herpes, hemophilia, raised moles, hepatitis, skin products such as Retinoids, Steroids, Prednisone, Accutane, and topical Vitamin C products. Wait one week before doing any sugaring services if you have recently done chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or Vitamin C treatments. Some of these conditions won’t be affected by sugaring however it is advised to let the practitioner know beforehand.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?

You may feel a little sensitive, this is normal. Avoid any creams, lotions, or deodorants with artificial fragrances. Do not use any products with hydroxyl acid for at least 24 hours to 48 hours after service. Slight pinking of the skin is normal and will go down completely in 24 hours if not sooner. Some clients complain of itching which is caused from increased blood flow and white blood cells in the sugared area, soaking with dead sea salts can help alleviate this. Avoid, tight fitting clothes, sun bathing/tanning, exercise, or any activities which can cause friction or sweating for at least 8 hours after services.

AT HOME CARE

Exfoliating and hydrating are extremely important to remember to do at least once a week if not more. This will remove the dead skin and push the hair up alleviating ingrowns and allowing for the hair removal to be more successful. If ingrowns are still an issue after sugaring you can apply a salt compress/soak to the area and apply a clay mask as a spot treatment. This will reduce inflammation and allow it to heal without picking and scaring to become an issue. PICKING IS NOT RECOMMENDED. Have a little patience with yourself and speak to your sugarista if you feel like you need more guidance on your at home care routine.
